Joint replacement is a surgical operation during which parts of a damaged or arthritic joint are removed and replaced with a plastic, ceramic or metal device called a prosthesis. The prosthesis is designed to give you the same range of motion as a healthy, normal joint.

The Joint and Spine Center at TriStar Southern Hills is dedicated to the treatment of patients needing primary and revision total joint replacement of the hip, knee, and shoulder. Our team of joint replacement surgeons offer non-surgical and surgical interventions for joint pain or mobility issues.

We offer patients the most technologically advanced joint care in a compassionate, patient-centered environment.

When Is Joint Replacement Recommended?

There are many joint conditions that can cause pain and disability. Often, joint pain is caused by damage to the articular cartilage that lines the ends of the bones. The damage can result from a fracture, arthritis, or another condition.

When symptoms don't respond to non-surgical treatment and the discomfort decreases the quality of life, doctors recommend joint replacement surgery.

Preparing for Joint Replacement Surgery

A couple of weeks before your joint replacement surgery, your Joint and Spine Center surgical team and primary care doctor will prepare you for the upcoming procedure by checking your general health, requiring several tests, such as blood tests and a cardiogram. Test findings help the team plan a successful surgery.

You can help in the preparation process by talking to your doctor and surgeon and asking questions. Eat nutritious meals and exercise. Following surgery, you will need assistance during your first week at home. Buy assistive items, such as handrails, a long-handled reacher or shower bench. Arrange for someone to help you with daily activities as you recover.

Planning ahead will ensure you have a successful surgery and quick recovery.

Joint Replacement Recovery

Each patient experiences recovery and rehabilitation differently. Typically, your doctor will encourage you to use the "new" joint after your surgery. Most patients will experience temporary pain in the replaced joint because the tissues are healing, the body is adjusting to the artificial joint, and muscles surrounding the joint are weak from inactivity. The pain usually goes away in a few months.

It can be challenging at times to use the joint during recovery, but exercise is vital to the recovery process. Your Joint and Spine Center doctor or physical therapist will give you exercises to help strengthen the joint and surrounding muscles and restore movement.

Joint Replacement Outcomes

Joint replacement surgery restores the quality of life to the majority of patients. In most cases, a joint replacement will last for many years, providing patients with pain-free and improved motion that would otherwise not have been possible.
